Let's be honest. You're asking yourself what great photos cost these days? I'm glad you asked! Your cheer photography session starts well before the photographer arrives on site, and doesn't end until long after the photographer goes home for the day and begins the painstaking task of editing your images so that they look their best. After all, your cheerleader needs to look at his or her best, right?

Below are some examples of rates for a few scenarios. Not finding what you were looking for, or did you have something else in mind? Contact me! I'd be happy to customize a session or package that work for you!

Portrait Sessions

I'm available to take portraits of your athlete at your home, gym (with owner permission), or an outdoor location of your choosing. Individual portrait sessions start at $125 (plus 8.5% sales-tax) for up to two people and include the following:

  • Round-trip travel up to 30 miles from Surprise, AZ (see "Add-ons" for travel) or the photographer's hotel when traveling.
  • Ample time to capture 4-5 poses (sessions average 1 hour, additional time at an additional charge)
  • 1 wardrobe and/or hairstyle change, if desired.
  • Print release for personal use. Commercial licensing is available at an additional charge.
  • Password-protected hosting of your images in a shareable online gallery for 1 year at
  • All full-resolution edited digital images delivered digitally.

Unless otherwise specified, outdoor portrait appointments will start about 2 hours before sunset, or 1 hour after sunrise. The client is responsible for the cost of permits, admission, and other associated costs associated with the shooting location, should they exist.


  • A wide variety of print products, albums, fine art mounts, photo apparel, and more, are priced separately at competitive rates and can be ordered through your online gallery.
  • Driven travel beyond 30 miles from Surprise, AZ: $1.25 per round-trip mile (measured 1-way to location).
    • If applicable and where exclusive long-distance travel is required, all travel costs will be the responsibility of the client.
  • For sessions including more than 2 people, add $25 per person to the session cost.
  • For sessions expected to last beyond 1 hour (for additional wardrobe changes, hair, multiple poses or changing locations), add $25 per each additional 15 minutes.
  • Specialized editing is available at an additional fee, and cost varies by the complexity of the request. 
  • Commercial usage rights are available with an appropriate model release at an additional charge.

Special Events: 

From time to time, RickJ Photography may offer special group or mini sessions at prices that differ from what is listed above. 

Cheer or other Sporting Events

Without a doubt, every athlete loves action shots capturing what they do best!

Most cheer events are shot ahead of time within the rules of the venue, and where applicable, images are placed for viewing and sale (where permitted) in online galleries at very competitive prices. Most images are uploaded 24-72 hours after the event. Please note that some venues may place restrictions or prohibit professional (or any) photography, and thus, not all events will be able to be photographed. 

Many cheer events can result in hundreds of photos per routine!

Depending on the sport and event, watermarked photos will be hosted in a public or password-protected gallery, and made available for 3 months after the end of the current season. Images and photo products purchased through the gallery will be free of watermarks. Quantity packages are available at a discount, too!

Average prices for post-paid event photography, per image:

  • Medium-resolution social media-friendly image: $5
  • Unlimited personal use full-resolution: $25
  • 4x6 print: $1-$2
  • 8x12 print $6-$8
  • Magazine Cover: $5-$6
  • Commercial licensing: Please contact for a quote.


For sessions, cash and all major credit cards are accepted via Square. I will pay your sales tax for cash transactions.

Checks made out to "Richard Johnson" are accepted from established clients but must clear before final products are delivered. Insufficient funds are subject to a $35 returned check fee in addition to the original balance due. 

The Fine Print

To cover time and expenses involved with preparing for your event, all scheduled bookings require a non-refundable retainer of 33% of the total package price at the time of booking, with the balance due at the start of the event. However, in the unlikely event that the photographer must cancel and a suitable alternative cannot be arranged, all retainers will be refunded.

Please note that sessions begin on time at the scheduled start time. Additional time can be purchased in 15-minute increments.

Please be aware that all session fees and products prices are exclusive of Surprise, AZ sales tax (8.5% as of 2017).

Additional products may be purchased at the time of booking, or at any time after the event through your online gallery.
